bio

Award-winning DJ, producer, label head and broadcaster Rebecca Vasmant is a force to be reckoned with who stands at the helm of Glasgow’s expanding jazz scene. Vasmant’s forthcoming album Who We Are, Becoming, cements her even further as a leading figure in UK jazz; so much so, it’s the first release in a new label partnership between New Soil—who released the Mercury-

nominated corto.alto album Bad With Names—and prolific artist-champion platform Women In Jazz.

With an EP (Dance Yourself Free, 2022) and a debut album (With Love, From Glasgow, 2021) already under her belt, Vasmant has established herself as a dynamic bandleader; writing, arranging, recording and producing all music herself. Her production prowess also extends to remixes for the likes of Allysha Joy, TC and the Groove Family, Scrimshire and Emma-Jean Thackray. All of her projects hold a recognisable sound, marked by her love of jazz, house and various genres under the umbrella of club culture.

As an artist, Vasmant and her band have performed at some of Europe’s most renowned festivals and venues, from the UK’s We Out Here and XJazz Festival in Berlin, to London’s iconic Jazz Cafe and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.

As a DJ, Vasmant has been touring for 14 years, performing to crowds in some of London, Glasgow and Paris’ most popular clubs as well as in Tokyo (The Room) and Tresor (Berlin); not to mention tastemaker festivals like Dekmantel and Glastonbury. All this, whilst performing as one of Sub Club (Glasgow)’s longest residents—where she first met and warmed up for longtime supporter, Gilles Peterson.

Vasmant was born in Paris, raised in the French countryside and relocated to Glasgow at 22; she’s been a proud ambassador of her adopted city’s independent music scene ever since, which inspired her to found her own label, Rebecca’s Records, in 2021. Since then, she’s been spotlighting Scottish talent by releasing her very own debut album alongside music from Azamiah featuring INDIA BLUE, ARI TSUGI, and rising artist kitti.

That cheerleading is also evident in her broadcasting; in 2023, Vasmant presented BBC Scotland programme DIY Jazz in Glasgow. Meanwhile, she’s also hosted a number of radio shows for Worldwide FM, JazzFM and Tokyo’s J-Wave.
